Task-based language teaching (TBLT) has been largely applied in many educational settings thanks to its effectiveness in maximizing students’ language competency. The term “task-based” is now more popular to most English teachers and attracts their attention in creating interesting and meaningful lessons for their students. This paper aims at presenting the background of task-based approach, giving definitions of learning tasks and describing various types of tasks used in the classroom such as listing, ordering and sorting, comparing, problem solving, sharing personal experiences and creative tasks. In addition, a TBLT framework including pre task, task cycle and language focus are carefully presented to provide some guidance on teaching and learning procedure. Finally, a sample of TBLT lesson plan is designed with detailed explanations of individual step to illustrate how the suggested teaching approach is implemented in the classroom.
